Start with a task, not a strategy

The fastest way to fail at AI is to start with 'we should do AI'. The fastest way to succeed is to pick one repetitive task that eats real hours and automate it. For most small New Zealand businesses that task is email triage, document data entry, or weekly reporting.

Our rule of thumb: if a task happens weekly, takes a staff member more than an hour, and follows a predictable pattern, it is a candidate for automation. That combination is where AI pays for itself in weeks, not years.

The projects that work at small-business scale

Plan for people, not just software

AI adoption fails when staff are handed a tool with no training and no trust. Involve the people who do the work, show them what the AI does and does not do, and keep a human in the loop for anything with consequences. Automation should remove drudgery - never accountability.
