Is Your Laptop Worth Repairing or Replacing? An Honest Checklist
Start with the actual problem
Before any money moves, know what's wrong. A cracked screen, dead battery or slow hard drive are all fixable - often cheaply. A motherboard fault on an older machine is a different conversation. Get a diagnosis in writing, then weigh the options.
The upgrade that rescues most laptops
If the complaint is speed, the single highest-value fix is replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD, usually with a RAM bump alongside. For many five-year-old laptops that's a fraction of replacement cost and transforms the machine. If the hardware is healthy, this is almost always the right answer.
When replacement wins
Replacement makes sense when: the machine is old enough that other parts are near end of life, the repair cost approaches half the value of a new equivalent, your software needs a newer operating system the hardware can't run well, or the laptop no longer covers your actual needs (battery life, weight, screen, ports).
Quick answers
Age alone isn't the test - condition and needs are. An SSD upgrade can give a healthy six-year-old laptop years more life; a machine with multiple failing components is usually better replaced.
